Stephen Coates is Senior Design Principal of Coates Architects Limited based in London. With more than 35 years of experience of developing concepts and then leading design teams across Europe and Asia from a 2.5 million square meter urban development in China, multiple retail and infrastructure projects in Hong Kong , to a private house in London.

An experienced lead architect, Stephen has much experience across a wide range of sectors including commercial, residential, education, master planning and infrastructure-related projects, from concept design through to implementation. With a focus on conceptualising original, exciting and deliverable architecture , Stephen has won numerous competitions from a University in Lisbon, Portugal to a 2 million square feet mixed use commercial development in Beijing.

Stephen is no stranger to Kolkata and has designed over 1 crore square feet of development in Kolkata including the iconic Urbana, Altius, Crosswinds, Unimark Asia and many others across a period of over 20 years.

His office experience is extensive having designed a number of HQ offices in London and China for Clients such as Land Securities and British Land in London and Hongkong Land and Sun Hung Kai in Hong Kong. Hotel experience includes being concept architect for the Four Seasons in Shanghai. Further commercial experience includes designing a number of destination retail for iconic global brands such as Giorgio Armani, Prada and Chanel amongst others.

With his vast experience, Stephen recognises the importance of having the best team around him from concept stage to completion. He is a demanding but supportive leader as he seeks to find original, dynamic and deliverable design solutions to all his projects. This approach has which make him probably the most prolific international architect in this great city and he looks forward to driving the design and construction of what promises to be his best and most important project yet.
